Azure Remote App is the current Microsoft solution for cloud-based application virtualization. The offering is very similar from a conceptual perspective to Citrix XenApp and offers the ability to run your corporate applications on Windows Server in the cloud. Similar to Citrix XenApp that companies have been deploying locally within their enterprises for years; this platform allows for your applications to run from anywhere anytime, but from the cloud. Here is some additional information about the services https://www.remoteapp.windowsazure.com/.
Starting October 1st, 2016 Azure Remote App will no longer be available, and will be end of life by October 31st, 2017. Why? There is a new offer coming that will provide Citrix Application Services on Azure. This offering will provide a feature rich cloud-based application-based platform to meet the needs of businesses looking for a cloud-based offering of this type.
What are the cumulative Goals of the new product offering?
- Continuation of the Azure Remote App Vision
- Scalability of the Azure Cloud Offerings with the Enterprise Ready capabilities of Citrix XenApp
- Ability to Migrate from the current Azure Remote App services to the new platform once available
- Delivery of Applications to Any Device
- Monitoring capabilities with Citrix Director
