Citrix Native Printing Basics - Tip #5 and #6

Tip # 5 Automatically Restart Print Services on a Citrix XenApp Applications Servers On a Citrix application server this would be the Citrix Print Service and the Print Spooler service. To locate these settings on Windows 2008 server go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tool, Services. Set the services to restart as shown below.

printmanager printspooler

Allowing these services to restart will prevent interruption of service to your users as it relates to their ability to print.

Tip #6 Allow an application to launch with out the printers being created in Citrix XenApp Allowing an application to open without mapping any printers is extremely beneficial when troubleshooting printing issues within your XenApp environment. If you have an application that will not start in a timely manner, unchecking this box will let you know if it is related to the user’s ability to map a printer properly.

Citrix Native Printing Basics – Tip #4

Tip # 4 Do not allow automatic installation of printer drivers: If you have not restricted this setting users will be able to install their own printer drivers on your Citrix application servers. If you are going to take the initiative to clean up the printer drivers from your servers you will want to prevent your users from installing drivers. Also if you refer back to my Tip #1, if you are relying primarily on the Citrix Universal Printer driver then these additional drivers become unnecessary clutter.

Note: If you take the time to implement this then make sure that any administrator who would be able to login to a Citrix server doesn’t map their printers when they login. This is an RDP option and if this is not removed before you RDP into the server this this will install unnecessary printer drivers on your Citrix servers.

Citrix Native Printing Basics – Tip #3

Tip # 3 Limit the number of Printer Drivers on your Citrix Application Servers:

This one is easier said than done, but is worth the effort in relation to benefit to the end-user experience. I have found that if you are planning for a new Citrix XenApp farm this is the time to plan for limitation of printer drivers. However, if you find that you are not in that position then it is worthwhile to work towards removal of unnecessary printer drivers from your Citrix application servers. The largest benefit being orevention of print spooler service crashes. When the print spooler services crash Citrix users will either be unable to temporarily print or even lose their ability to print completely when attached to the Citrix server with the printer spooler problems.

Also, an important note is that your goal should be to use only printer drivers that can be installed natively from windows. However, I have found that if you use an HP Universal Print driver in a limited basis that your Citrix application printing will continue to function smoothly.

As you can see below in the picture that this Citrix application server has been limited in regards to the number of printer drivers and does include some versions of the HP Universal Printer driver. Again only used on a limited basis.

Citrix Native Printing Basics – Tip #2

Tip # 2 Do not change the Universal Driver Priority Order: I have personally seen adverse effects if this order gets changed. An example of what could happen is that an entire Citrix application server might map the printers to a driver other than the Universal Print Driver and then subsequently negatively affecting users with your users printing. The only time I would change this would be if it directly relates to a Citrix support call.

Citrix Native Printing Basics - Tip #1

If you are familiar with Citrix printing then you understand how painful it can be if it is not setup properly. I have put together a series of tips that I found found to work to create a rock solid citrix printing setup for you organization with native Citrix policies and recommendations. If you are interested in learning how to set up native printing then this Tip of the Week series will provide you with the guidance you need to setup a native Citrix printing in your environment. This document lalso assumes that your organization is primarily using HP printers within your organization, but this series is not limited to environments that other models of printers. With that being said, let’s get right to it.

Tip # 1 Use the Citrix Universal Printer whenever possible: The Citrix Universal printer driver with the latest Citrix Receiver will handle 95% of your printing in an HP printing environment. By using the Citrix Universal Printer Driver the need for 3rd party printer drivers is reduced significantly. Use of 3rd party printer drivers can cause printer spooler crashes affecting your printing.
