We are on a continued path to migrated workloads in the cloud and Windows 10 desktops are part of this trajectory.  How do we make sure that we deliver “in-the-office” performance to our enterprise users at home and leverage Windows 10 desktops in the cloud?  Today we are going to peel back the layers that can help support the performance your enterprise users need regardless of where they are working.  We will also take a sneak peek into the IT Community event called the Inside Track where these findings were unveiled.

Expectations and Experiences

Desktop performance; especially login times and application performance; historically have been a challenge, regardless of the operating system.  For years, for me I would get to the office, boot up my computers, and just knew that it was a great time to grab a coffee or tea – as it would be a few minutes (if I was lucky) until I could get into my desktop, and then from there it could be a few more to launch the applications needed before I could start working. With this in front of me it was not ever wise to plan for a meeting first thing.

Eventually Windows 10 was released for our physical endpoints.  This is when we really started see desktop and application performance improvements.  Even still without proper configuration/tools implemented, login times can be slow.  Often for the best outcomes 3rd party software needs to be implemented to ensure end to end performance.  As time has gone on our expectations have changed, because with the right tools implemented, we could then generally expect great performance from our “in-the-office” Windows 10 Desktops.

Windows 10 Desktops in the Cloud

Now let’s add the cloud to the conversation.  Reality is with teams primarily being remote during this time, the cloud is more desirable even for corporate Windows 10 desktops. A couple reasons being, simplified management and deployments to the enterprise user as work teams are primarily remote, but also for the ability to easily scale and deploy access to users.  The cloud scales in an expediated way allowing enterprises the ability to quickly deploy workstations to their users.

But what I have found is that when you deploy anything to the cloud, performance should be top of mind.  The right 3rd party tools are often needed to ensure even a Windows 10 Desktop will run without latency across any internet connection.

Window 10 Desktops Performance Matters

Performance of your Windows 10 Desktops regardless of whether they are on-premises or in the cloud matters.  Having a way to not only ensure performance, but have metrics, monitoring and more will create the most success.

Here is my checklist of features that are important to ensuring Windows 10 desktop performance.

  • A way to properly migrate existing desktops to the cloud that ensures the integrity of the Windows 10 desktop
  • Performance monitoring of the device for wholistic health insights
  • Ability to run diagnostics that will lead to a quick resolution of performance issues
  • Layering technologies that ensure performance of application delivery and launch

Wrapping up my thoughts on Windows 10 desktops in the cloud, they really are a great option for your enterprise users going forward.  Keep in mind though, that while cloud is simple, performance can vary so as you move forward with your deployment be prepared and have the right tools that provide you the ability to deploy with a performance first mindset successfully.

Shifting Gears to the Inside Track

Recently Liquidware hosted The Inside Track where a great group of companies shared what was new with their products with a group of IT Community influencers.  I was honored to be invited to attend and learned about many great new offerings that enhance the EUC (End-user computing) experience.

Here is a rundown of the companies that presented:  IGEL, Liquidware, Nvidia, Stratodesk and ThinPrint.

Spending even a short amount of time during this even was great for learning about the problems these solutions solve was very interesting and if you want to catch what’s new too, check out the rundown here!  Enjoy!
